You don’t need to pack like you’re moving in. A carry-on roller suitcase + a personal-size bag is more than enough for you, your partner, and baby. (I used a Calpak carry-on roller + a Dagne Dover medium bag and fit it all.)
Here’s the real breakdown of what you’ll actually touch, what you won’t, and the small luxuries that make a big difference.
What You’ll Actually Use
For You, Mama
- Your own gown or nursing PJs – The hospital gowns are flimsy and fall off. Bring something that stays put, you’ll be living in it.
- Going-home outfit – A loose dress works best, whether you have a c-section or vaginal birth.
- Toiletries – Toothbrush, face wash, moisturizer, dry shampoo, lip balm, hair ties (skip the claw clips, you’ll be dozing off and they’re uncomfortable).
- Sleep mask – Perfect for grabbing naps during the day.
- Long phone charger – Essential.
- Nursing bras – Skims and Kindred Bravely are my favorites.
- Breast pump (if you plan to pump) – Bring the one you’ll be using at home so you’re comfortable from the start. The MomMed S21 is my go-to.
For Baby
- 2–3 sleepers/onesies (newborn + 0–3 month).
- Two types of swaddles – I packed a Halo and Swaddle Me swaddles so we could test what worked.
- Going-home outfit – Cute and practical. We did an Old Navy zip-up sleeper.
- Car seat – And yes, a convertible car seat works just fine. The hospital staff wheels you both out and checks baby into the car.
- Instant formula (optional) – The hospital will have some, but if you plan to use a specific brand, bring a couple to have on hand.
For Your Partner
- Change of clothes.
-
Blanket (they’ll want one).
- Skip the snack-packing. This is not the time to cheap out. You’re already spending for the whole birth experience. Treat yourself: DoorDash the latte, the pizza, the sushi. The hospital feeds you both, so think of delivery food as little luxuries during a big moment.
Pro Move
An empty bag – We brought a Trader Joe’s tote and filled it with all the hospital freebies: diapers, wipes, postpartum gear. Stock up.
What I Packed But Didn’t Use
- iPad, books, headphones (no downtime).
- Fan + blanket for me (hospital’s were fine).
- Postpartum supplies from home (hospital ones were better).
- “Touch light” egg lamp – our hospital kept the lights dim the whole time.
